One of the most powerful and interesting Italian film streaming of the last few years is now available on demand: these are ” Favolacce ” by the D’Innocenzo brothers, presented in competition at the Berlin Film Festival 2020, where he won the prize for best screenplay.
Set in the most isolated residential suburbs of Rome, the film tells of some families whose life seems to flow serenely and without great hitches: in this reassuring picture, tensions begin to arise between parents and children, with the latter appearing diligent at school but deep down they feel totally alone and unhappy.
After the debut with “The Land of Enough”, the two Roman twins (born in 1988) return to reasoning about complex family dynamics, emphasizing the hypocrisy and cruelty that are hidden behind the facades of many villas and many residential neighborhoods and analyzing how, in younger people, certain behaviors can trigger furious and unexpected anger.
A personal and courageous style
Despite being at the beginning of their career, the D’Innocenzo brothers show that they have a personal and courageous style, a directorial and narrative touch capable of shaking and proposing anything but banal reflections.
«Favolacce» could be defined as a sort of black fairy tale, which often plays over the top: in different passages one would want to look elsewhere, considering the crudeness of numerous sequences.
The risks are very high, but, thanks to an impeccable editing and a fully aware and coherent direction, the film maintains an exceptional balance for its entire duration, managing to keep the rhythm up to the surprising end.
Given the themes and the ways in which he treats them, it could be a film that not everyone will like, but in recent times such an ambitious and layered product has rarely been seen, in which the directors D’Innocenzo also confirm their skill in the direction of the actors, given that the entire cast does its job beautifully ( Elio Germano is one of the main performers ).
With this film, the two young Roman authors enter by right among the most significant names of Italian cinema of the present and, above all, of the future.
DNA – Definitely not suitable
Anyone looking for an undoubtedly simpler and lighter Italian film can opt for « DNA – Definitely not suitable », the directorial debut of Lillo & Greg.
The well-known comic duo is clearly also the protagonist of this comedy of misunderstandings, centered on a scientific experiment capable of exchanging the genetic code of the characters.
The narrative basis of this feature film (also available on demand) knows a lot already seen and unfortunately the sensation is amplified by continuing the vision, which is definitely predictable.
There is no shortage of fun curtains and the amalgam between the two actors is now consolidated, but there is not much else to report positively in an operation that is quickly forgotten.
